William Pike Challenge
On the 28th February Rimu Year ⅞’s had meet the teacher night, the students spent all day preparing food and cooking. Then we came back at about 5:30 then while the parents looked at our blogs and talked about our new classroom while Rimu set all the food out and heated what we needed to heat up. ` William Pike came to talk about how he lost his leg and the ‘William Pike Challenge’. The Year ⅞’s and their parents sat in the Wharehui while he presented his presentation.
William Pike presented his 40 minute presentation and talked about how he lost his leg and got trapped in Mt Ruapehu hut and had hyperthermia! He went up there with his friend James, after climbing the mountain for a few hours William let James lead the way for a few hours but when they got to the top they couldn’t find the hut! William thought That James had led them to some random place but luckily they found it, it was just covered in a huge pile of snow. So they had to dig the snow out of the doorway. That night a huge storm happened the door of the hut flew open and came off its hinges, then William woke up and jumped behind the door trying to see what has had happened but it was pitch black outside. And that's when all the snow and mud came into the hut and William was trapped under snow and mud. And that's when James woke up and tried to dig his way through the snow to get Williams leg free but, it was no use. Then James went to the cabin on the other side of where they were sleeping to get some warm clothes but it was so muddy and snowy he couldn't find anything but luckily he found his boots! And he walked down the mountain and after a 40 minute walk he found someone in a big truck thing and the lights lit him up like a flashlight. James explained that his friend is trapped up a 40 minute walk so he lead him to where the hut is and they got helicopters and ambulances to help Willam and take him to hospital. It was an exciting story to listen to.
