My Prototec Graph

Hey Bloggers,

This is my column graph which has my progress on prototec for the last 6 weeks.
This site has from stage 2 - 8 and it is a great way to learn maths, it has decimals, percentages, fractions, times tables, addition, subtraction and place value. You can select a times test or you can just do it at your own pace.

The Ministry of Education requires us to know our basic facts and times tables so we can reach National Standard in Maths. Reaching National Standards in maths is boring, ways that we can make it better is to have maths optional for the people who want to work with money when they are older.

Here is the link for Prototec:

100WC 1/11/16

Hey bloggers,
Sorry I haven't posted in a while but here is my 100WC, hope you enjoy :)

A dark foreboding cloud, lurked over the forest on a silent cold winter's night. As the smoke cleared you could see the young extravagant girl sitting in the silence; but the silence was too deadly almost unbearable so much so that she couldn't help but scream out in pain because she could not conceal the guilt inside of her.

Inside of her innocence was all that she was fighting for but some spec of guilt was still present.
As the sun started to set the dark shadows loomed around me, almost as dark as my broken soul. Nightmares still prevail...

Novel study

A few weeks ago, Rimu class started doing a Novel Study.
I picked the story Auggie and Me and the story was really interesting.
Because Auggie was born with a facial disfigurement which made him look different. I enjoyed doing this Novel Study, especially making a board game! I found it difficult to explain two conflicts within my novel. Enjoy!

100WC

Here is my 100 WC for this week.

It was a beautiful night to go for a wander, Skai stepped outside to feel the warm breeze blowing in her face! She sees a light in the distance and her curiosity starts growing.

As she walks deeper into the night it starts to fog, she gets scared so pulls out her flashlight... But it's flat, she sees the light again and it has grown bigger just as much as her curiosity has.

She finally finds the Bamboo Forest with the glistening and glowing leafs, she catches one and hold it as it warms her up.  She is happy!

Here is a pic of the prompt.

A couple of weeks ago Rimu Class went to the Air Force Museum, we got to learn about the war and more about the differences between The Air force, The Navy and The Army. Once we finishes talking about it then we went into a room that showed us what is was like on an island.

We got to have a explore the Museum, we went into a room with huge planes and things that they used back in the war. There was a big wall in the Museum about the people who dies in the war.

As a response to the museum the class had to get into groups and make a project to send to the Air Force Museum. Our group, Emily, Jorja and I made a collab with Jesse and Gus, here is our video! Hope you enjoy :)

Rock Climbing

IMG_0540.JPG

Rimu Year ⅞’s are participating in the 2016 William Pike Challenge. William and James were walking up Mt Ruapehu they stayed in a small cabin. It was about the middle of the night when there was a huge snow storm! William got stuck in the mud and the snow so he couldn’t move. William had to get his leg amputated but still carried on travelling New Zealand.

On Monday the Year ⅞’s went rock climbing and abseiling as our second William Pike Challenge, here is my story about my experience and feelings when I was rock climbing.

The Rimu Year ⅞’s went up to Cattlestop Crag for our second William Pike outdoor challenge. We arrived in the Port Hills and it was FREEZING.  Steve and Josh were our instructors for the day, we started walking on a narrow pathway to the abseiling wall. Below me was an amazing view of Christchurch, grass hills, rocks, roads and houses.

When I was climbing I looked down and saw an amazing view of Christchurch. I felt so small compared to this view!
IMG_0776.JPG
We stopped at the abseiling wall and Steve talked to us about what we will be doing at this rock., we kept walking to the Rock Climbing rock. He got us to put our harnesses on to get ready for climbing.

Steve took six people to abseiling, and Josh took about fourteen to Rock Climbing. I climbed up one of the easy rock wall and I got about a ⅓ of the way up the rock and then I got down. While we were waiting to go to abseiling we explored the area Steve took 5 people to abseiling and Josh took his 6 people to rock climbing.

When we arrived at the abseiling wall I thought that it would be pretty easy! But no, after Jesse and Emily went down it was my turn, I was so scared!

I abseiled down and felt like I was walking on a wall!

Hope you enjoyed!

As we move around we need to put 1 fact about the country on a Padlet, so far I have read 2 books. We also have a google doc that we put the title of the book and write a short blurb about it. At the moment I am reading Anne Franks diary and it is an interesting book!

My 100 WC!

Here is my 100 WC for this week. I was working on orgonising my ideas into paragraphs.

It was pitch black, the moon was my only light as I walk into the deep dark forest. I see a red flame in the distance, I walk towards it but it vanished.

I kept walking hoping I would find the group, I hear a cracking sound and look behind me. There is is the red flame I start walking towards it but it leaves again.

I hear the group talkig in a distance, I start running towards them and see the light again and seen the flame. As the flame flickered and then it went out.

“Your back Katie!”

True or false?

The Horror Maze, Dun Dun Duuuunnnnnn!!!

Last Friday (29th of April) Emily and I went to the horror maze, it was pitch black when Lu drove us to the horror maze. Emily and I walked up to the entrance which was a little ticket booth with a creepy sign saying Entrance in neon lights with light and the ticket man was a clown and he popped up and we gave him our tickets.

We went in and started walking like really old Grandma’s (because we were scared). There were lots of bushes filled with horror maze actors. All of a sudden an actor grabbed onto Emily’s leg, and away Emily's arm went, strait into the actors nose even though it says no abuse to  the actors.

We kept walking then some actor popped out of the bushes with a chainsaw came out and chased us! Then we kept walking like we were really old Grandma’s again, then Emily and I saw a little girl in the middle of the pathway she was wearing a white dress and crying blood. We tried to help her as she creepily turned around, we slowly walked towards her then bent down then she grabbed our arms and tried to throw us to the ground, but landed on a mat.

When we turned around to see if she was there she was gone, disappeared, vanished, not there! We were scared like really scared. We carried on walking then a clown was following us just following us he grabbed onto our arms and whispered something.

Who knows what he said though he sounded like he was creepy kooky. We heard a woman’s voice saying
“Follow the lighted pathway”
So we followed it and we were finally finished. All we wanted to do is go home and watch my little pony!

That’s my true or false story!

Katie surfing!

About 2 weeks ago the Year 7/8's went surfing for our William Pike Challenge award. It was kinda easy I think but it took a little while to catch a wave and the you only had a few seconds to get up, I enjoyes it and it was fun. There were lots of crabs in the sand but some of them were just shells. I liked my two Instructors, Tully and Donna. They were really nice and funny (and secretly my favourite instructors). I enjoyed surfing and wearing the wetsuits i think. Here is my surfing senses poem :)

I feel the waves coming up to the shore and the sand under my feet, and the water going up my nose when I fall off my board.

I taste the salty water in my mouth when I get pushed over by a big wave.

I see the waves crashing and then coming up to shore with the foamy stuff.

I touch the cold salty water.

I hear the waves crashing, dogs barking and people on the beach laughing.

William Pike Challenge

William Pike Challenge

On the 28th February Rimu Year ⅞’s had meet the teacher night, the students spent all day preparing food and cooking. Then we came back at about 5:30 then while the parents looked at our blogs and talked about our new classroom while Rimu set all the food out and heated what we needed to heat up. ` William Pike came to talk about how he lost his leg and the ‘William Pike Challenge’. The Year ⅞’s and their parents sat in the Wharehui while he presented his presentation.

William Pike presented his 40 minute presentation and talked about how he lost his leg and got trapped in Mt Ruapehu hut and had hyperthermia! He went up there with his friend James, after climbing the mountain for a few hours William let James lead the way for a few hours but when they got to the top they couldn’t find the hut! William thought That James had led them to some random place but luckily they found it, it was just covered in a huge pile of snow. So they had to dig the snow out of the doorway. That night a huge storm happened the door of the hut flew open and came off its hinges, then William woke up and jumped behind the door trying to see what has had happened but it was pitch black outside. And that's when all the snow and mud came into the hut and William was trapped under snow and mud. And that's when James woke up and tried to dig his way through the snow to get Williams leg free but, it was no use. Then James went to the cabin on the other side of where they were sleeping to get some warm clothes but it was so muddy and snowy he couldn't find anything but luckily he found his boots! And he walked down the mountain and after a 40 minute walk he found someone in a big truck thing and the lights lit him up like a flashlight. James explained that his friend is trapped up a 40 minute walk so he lead him to where the hut is and they got helicopters and ambulances to help Willam and take him to hospital. It was an exciting story to listen to.

For the William Pike Challenge we will be doing Outdoor activities, community service, a sport or a hobby, interacting with positive role models. Maintain active and healthy lifestyle, have courage, teamwork, resilience, compassion, pride, enthusiasm and confidence. Take every opportunity you have to step up and be a leader. And so the ‘William Pike Challenge’ Begins!

Wonder - First Person Point Of View

Wonder - First person point of view
Last week Rimu class have been writing a short essay about first person point of view.

I think R.J Palacio uses 1st person when she tells ‘Wonder’. There are three examples as to why I think this.
The story is written in first person because at the start of the book she used,
“I know I’m not an ordinary ten-year-old kid.”

Next, August is describing himself when he is introducing himself to the reader, for example,
“If I found a magic lamp and I could have one wish, I would wish that I had a normal face that no one ever noticed at all.”

Then, Palacio continues to use the first person point of view to tell the story by using the words ‘Me’ and ‘I’ for example,
“I like it when mum tells the story, it makes me laugh so much.”

Therefore you can clearly see why I think wonder is written in first person.

In the first two weeks of school, Rimu class has been learning and creating a visual mihi and learn how to say our mihi in Māori. This is our introduction to our class and community. Each visual mihi has 3 parts to it.

  1. A self portrait or a photo
  2. Places of significance to us
  3. Symbols or pictures the represent our culture

The mihi was fun and difficult to make.
